Naturopathy

What is Naturopathy?

Originating in Europe. Naturopathy is a holistic system of medicine which recognises the interconnection of all body systems and organs, addressing the whole person rather than symptomatic prescribing. The body possesses an inherent ability to heal itself – always trying to come back to a state of homeostasis or balance. Sometimes it may need extra support along the way.

Qualified Naturopaths use a combination of evidence-based research, empirical evidence and traditional philosophies when it comes to treatment. Naturopathic medicine helps support the bodies natural ability to heal itself using gentle therapeutics. Individualised treatment plans are tailored to your needs and may include dietary and lifestyle recommendations, nutrient supplementations, herbal medicine, energetic medicine such as flower essences or homeopathics or through body work.

Rather than symptom prescribing (though this is sometimes necessary for the short term), we work to identify and address the underlying/root cause of your disease and ill health.

An initial consult is thorough and generally lasts 75-90 minutes in which we go through all aspects of your history and health including mental, emotional and physical health, we look into your diet, your lifestyle, your family history, take observations including nail, tongue, iris analysis and anything else that is relevant to your case.

For most people, naturopathic treatment has a de-layering effect, like an onion with its multiple layers. Not everything will be resolved after one consult or treatment. Depending on the complexity of the case, multiple consults may be required spaced out over a few months.

What is Naturopathy recommended for?

Naturopathic medicine can work effectively in preventative health, chronic disease management and acute illness. It can also work complementary with mainstream western medicine and other modalities.

How does Naturopathy work?

Naturopathic Medicine is a holistic system of health care used around the world which utilises scientific and traditional knowledge to enhance overall health while encouraging restoration from ill health. The body has self healing mechanisms which can be seen on a daily basis like our ability to heal wounds. But this mechanism can become dysfunctional because of various factors including diet, lifestyle, environment factors. One of the aims of Naturopathic Medicine is to identify and remove any of these factors and to stimulate the innate healing ability. Prevention is ultimately key, but naturopathy also works for acute and chronic conditions and complements well when used with orthodox medicine.

Naturopaths spend a lot of time questioning to gain an understanding of the overall picture of what is going on for you. With an aim to empower individuals to take charge of their own health. They also utilise an array of therapies including herbal medicine, nutrition, flower essences, homeopathy, dietary and lifestyle advice to come up with an individualised treatment plan.

Finding the right Naturopath

Unfortunately, as the title “Naturopath” isn’t regulated here in Australia, people are able to call themselves a Naturopath without formal education or qualification. For a Health Practitioner to be qualified, they preferably have a Degree, Bachelor of Health Science and are registered with a recognised association.

By undergoing this extensive training – Skye has been able to form a sound understanding of the anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, psychology and pathology, with the inclusion of in depth training in herbal medicine and nutritional medicine.
